HomeHomeAttempting to make comics while having a full-time job

About

Me

The job

I work as a full-time software engineer, with the luxury of working from home to save on commute times. And yet I still barely have time to draw!

Skillset

I have zero formal training in art, nor do I ever want to go to art school. Science and cold hard logic all the way!

That said, it does take me less time to finish my day job tasks than it does to draw a single panel sometimes.

I'm fuuuuuuucked

Considerations

I have a disabled family member who I must support, meaning I cannot even begin to think about quitting my job or going part time until I can be 100% certain that financial stability can be achieved.

This also means that I have to take care of everything–groceries, bills, taxes, etc.–for the both of us, thus reducing workable hours.

Why is my time management so shit?

  • I have a shit sleep sched
  • The worse it gets, the better my productivity gets because no one can interrupt me 2-6am
  • But bruh you gotta wake up to help out the family member lol…so productivity down
  • I draw at an abysmal pace and cannot stop myself from detailing

The comic

Overview

  • Is a comedy
  • Is fully plotted out
  • Is 95% summarized in detail, and around 35% scripted out
  • Is drawn in Clip Studio Paint EX
  • Uses SketchUp with models built 99.9% from scratch for backgrounds
  • Has a schedule with deeply-pondered-upon, self-imposed due dates…which have been pushed back three times
  • Hoping to get something out by October Will definitely, 100% publish before the end of October 2021!!! (please) lmao okay nevermind. Yeahhh I don’t know when it’ll actually be published, but I’m aiming for some time before the end of this year (2023).

Current progress

Not counting the time I’ve spent plotting into the night, writing scripts and making 3D models and whatnot, I’ve actively been drawing the actual episodes for over a year now, and I’ve drawn…

…Less than 4 episodes lol. Fuck.

Now I do have legitimate reasons for this pretty incredible ineptitude:

  • Had to find fonts, and settle bunch of other unaccounted stuff when starting the first episode (fair, as I didn’t know what I was doing yet)
  • Was in midst of moving and buying a home for the first time while working on the second episode, which has straight up killed off all personal time for several weeks
  • Spent time making this blog oopes
  • Am just extremely, painfully, atrociously slow at drawing

The blog

Topics

I started this to log my attempts to work on the comic as the site's description suggests, but my post plans so far contain zero progress-related updates lol so maybe not?

Either way, it will also cover comic planning and organization techniques I’ve found useful, and any other quality of life things that might help you on your own webcomic-making journey.

Why did you make this?

Because a really smart guy on youtube said it would be a good idea. Seriously.

I could be wasting my time writing to a wall, but I could also be creating a good resource for someone out there. If this can help me on the road to financing myself via personal projects like the webcomic, then the only way to miss out is to not try.

Why are you posting tips and tricks when you haven't published your webcomic yet?

I have a lot of ideas. My actualization power is just at a snail's pace due to mostly external factors.

But that doesn't stop ideas from being valuable, especially if someone with more time or a faster work speed can make use of them. So if you've found something that seems to work really well for you, definitely share it--it might help someone else!

What's with the cheese?

Read the comic when it comes out to find out! (If you support me I can get it out quicker... :D)
